My personal hero, Stephen Jay Gould, wrote a fun article on the infantilization of Mickey Mouse for Mickey’s 50th birthday. Gould notes that, over his 50 years of existence, Mickey’s appearance has slowly morphed from basically a beady-eyed rat to something more baby-like in appearance, with a larger head, smaller limbs and larger eyes. As his appearance softened into what people biologically recognize as a child, opinions of him improved and he became “cuter”. Actually, he just started triggering the biological response described by Konrad Lorenz to protect things with certain infantile characteristics.
So yeah, there’s a biological basis for big eyes = cute.
